2-TIMES · Art
Hannah Whitaker,
Live Agent
@ M+B

My approach has
always been about
automating the
photographic process
to aspire to a
geometric perfection
that it never
quite achieves.

In this manner,
Hannah Whitaker's
‘Live Agent’ invokes
the ubiquitous female
voice of automated
answering systems –
pointing to a larger
cultural impulse to
female attributes.

The exhibition:
Is the Brooklyn-based
artist's second solo
with M+B Gallery in
Los Angeles, for which
she has incorporated
wavy scribbling –
marking a new turn
towards the gestural.

I was thinking
about the stutters &
pauses you hear from
a customer service
line's interactive voice
response system...
I'm interested in the
strangeness that results
when the photograph's
‘programming’ contains
moments that assert a
human gestural quality,
but is nonetheless still
the product of an
automated process.
