Helen Johnson,

—

In Australia at
the moment, the
most important
things happening
culturally are
concerned with
Indigenous critiques
of colonialism.
”

The exhibition:

Is Melbourne-based
Helen Johnson's
first solo at the ICA
co–commissioned with
Artspace in Sydney,
for which the artist
presents a series of
large-scale paintings
that repurpose and
re-examine images
of rituals used by
colonists in an attempt
to legitimise their
occupation of Australia.

Johnson weaves &
overlays historical
and contemporary
signifiers creating
points of tension and
reflection through the
medium of painting.
