2-TIMES • Art
Serge Alain Nitegeka,
‘Personal Effects
in Black’
@ Marianne
Boesky Gallery
—
“A dynamic interplay
between depth and
flatness, inviting the
viewer to step into
the frame only to
block the seeming
point of entry.”
The exhibition:
Is the Johannesburg-
based artist's third
solo with Marianne
Boesky in New York,
presented across both
of the gallery’s Chelsea
locations; featuring a
new body of works
created in 2017 that
continues Nitegeka’s
examinations of color,
form, and space —
with his new paintings
the artist moves further
into abstraction,
focusing in particular
on the effects of
the color black.
“Black is brute
darkness. An intangible
destructive mass that
is dense and viscous,
weighing me down
deep into silence.
It puts me into a
state of overwhelming
appreciation and
meditation — a
space of unknown
emptiness & depth.”
