2-TIMES • Art
Toby Ziegler,
‘The Cheat’
@ Galerie
Max Hetzler
—
“I've always been
interested in the idea
that there are certain
painters who self
consciously make
images that work on
two levels – they can
be totally abstract,
and somehow, totally
figurative at the
same time...”
Title meaning:
‘The Cheat’ refers
to both the subject
matter of French artist
Georges de La Tour's
Baroque paintings —
and it also emphasizes
a sense of alienation &
uncertainty associated
with today's digital
image distribution.
The exhibition:
Is London-born Toby
Ziegler's 4th solo with
Galerie Max Hetzler,
for which the artist
presents a new body
of works comprising a
group of [8] paintings,
[2] sculptures and a
two-channel video,
which considers the
human predisposition
to look for pattern and
meaning when confronted
by apparent chaos.
