2-TIMES · Art
Ryan McGinley,
'Fall' & 'Winter'

The Idea:
McGinley's
latest split
photo series
represents a
multifariously
momentous
change within
the photographers
practice — rather
than exploring
the American
landscape
through the
lens of
geographical
variation, these
new images
scrutinize and
poeticize its
temporal
metamorphosis.

Ryan on Fall:
"During
the fall, I’d
drive around
aimlessly
in search of
color...”
“I’d usually
pull over and
get out of the
car about 20
times a day
to look at
trees or fields,
or plants –
Sometimes
we’d do fast
shoots, or
sometimes
we’d stay for
a few hours.”

Ryan on Winter:
“Watkins Glen
State Park was
challenging...”
"I wore heated
gloves, which
didn’t really
heat my hands
up, but gave
my fingers
enough warmth
to hold my
camera and
press the button.
I’d recharge
numerous sets
of batteries for
the gloves each
night to last
me a full day
of shooting in
the freezing cold."
